MILWAUKEE, WI: 36 Hours of Art, Architecture and Unexpected Delights
When most people plan a Midwest getaway, Milwaukee might not top their list. But our whirlwind 36-hour visit proved that Wisconsin's largest city offers a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and architectural wonder that rivals its bigger neighbors.
Our home base at the Saint Kate's Art Hotel set the tone for our art-filled adventure. This isn't your typical hotel; it's a living gallery where creativity spills from the walls into every corner, making even a coffee run an artistic experience. The location proved perfect for exploring Milwaukee's vibrant downtown and riverfront on foot.
The crown jewel of our visit was the Milwaukee Art Museum. Santiago Calatrava's stunning architectural design, with its massive wings that open and close daily, is worth the trip alone. But the museum's world-class collection kept us engaged for hours, proving that you don't need to visit coastal cities for exceptional art experiences.
Milwaukee's food scene surprised us. From the fresh catches at St. Paul Fish Company to the innovative Asian fusion at DanDan, the city's culinary offerings went far beyond the expected beer and cheese (though those were a fun experience, too!). A stop at Leon's for frozen custard, a Milwaukee must, reminded us that sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best.
An evening stroll along the Milwaukee River revealed a city embracing its waterfront with a vibrant riverwalk system. The path led us past historic third ward buildings, modern developments, and plenty of spots to stop and watch the world go by.
For fellow empty nesters considering a Milwaukee getaway, we recommend:
Timing your visit to the Art Museum's wing opening (daily at 10am)
Making dinner reservations in advance, especially for popular spots like DanDan
Taking time to explore the Historic Third Ward on foot
Checking the city's event calendar, you might discover something out of the ordinary and very midwest like China Lights at the botanical garden
Saving room for frozen custard, no matter the weather
Our 36 hours in Milwaukee left us wanting more, proving that sometimes the best travel experiences come from giving smaller cities a chance to shine. From world-class art to creative cuisine, Milwaukee offers a perfect midweek or weekend escape for curious travelers willing to look beyond the obvious destinations.
